We have been experiencing problems for about the past 3 weeks sending pdf attachments in emails to some contacts, where the attachment will arrive as a winmail.dat file (prior to three weeks age we had not seen the problem).

I'm well aware of the longstanding problem with RTF emails delivering attachments to some non-outlook files as winmail.dat files, but the weird thing is the messages are being sent in Plain Text format.  We've also tried sending the messages in HTML, and still the recipients receive the attachment as winmail.dat.

The problem is only occurring with some recipeints, and it seems that what those recipients have in common is that they are using Windows Live Mail.

Anyone have any ideas why this behaviour would be seen on Windows Live Email accounts for messages sent in both Plain Text and HTML format?

I have a very different problem.   I use Outlook for Mac 2011 and have no problem sending real attachments, etc.  But colleagues send me attachments that come as winmail.dat.   How can I open them and save them as a word or pdf document?
When I send myself attachments from work (off of a PC running Windows 7, MS Outlook), whether I send one attachment or multiple attachments, I receive one 'winmail.dat' file as the attachment.

I'm using Office for Mac 2011 on the latest iMac.  My wife uses the same iMac set up and Office for Mac 2011.  I will send to both of us; I receive the winmail.dat file, she will get them correctly, and I have to have her send them to me from her computer so I can use them.

How can I fix this?
HELP!!  I just spent 30 minutes on hold with MS Technical support to get a person that had never heard of the Winmail.dat issue.  Can someone please help me? My calendar invites used to work up until 2 weeks ago. Now when someone sends me an invite it it a winmail.dat attachment that I cannot open. Pls don't send me the link with the expalianation from Barry Wainright. I have 2011 and he only goes as far as 2010. I am a very basic user. I don't know how to find nor clear cache mail in this software. At this point, I'm wishing I had a PC back. At least I'd get something done.
when im sending an attachment from my PC to my Mac, the mac reads attachment as Winmail.dat, im sending from PC in in HTML format, is it my Mac that's converting to Winmail.dat or my PC?
