I just installed Windows 8.1 64-bit. This is weird because I've used Win 8.1 before and don't remember ever having to give my webcam permissions to specific apps.

However, when I launch Windows Essentials - Movie Maker, I see my webcam in the OPTIONS window, but no stream, just a black window.

I had the same issue with Skype.

I found a support article showing how to get to the webcam permissions screen (in Metro: win+c, type webcam, click on webcam privacy settings. I enables Skype and all is well in Skype.

Essentials Movie Maker is not listed and there is not way to "search for other apps" or the like.

I just started using Movie Maker on my Win 7 laptop and it just worked, even with the same USB webcam and the built in webcam.

Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

So...

I have Windows Phone 8.1, my partner has 8.1, she is my contact through her Microsoft account which she also signed into Skype with. We attempted to use the feature of going to a Skype video call from a standard phone call and the Skype button is greyed out...

I then notice she does not have any Skype details in her profile on my phone - only email (her Microsoft account) (which is also her Skype account). So I search for her using her Microsoft email address in Skype and she appears as a non-contact who I have to send a request to!

So now I have her twice in Skype; Once for Skype and once for Messenger!! I tried linking her accounts in her profile on my phone - which then shows her as one contact at outlook.com too - who I can Messenger chat with AND start a Skype call at outlook.com!!

I have repeated this with a friend who was also previously a long time Messenger user that has downgraded to Skype.

None of this was previously an issue as we all still used Messenger and could chat with the now GREATLY missed built in Messenger chat on Windows Phone, but now this has been dropped we are forced to use the depressingly slow and awfully clunky Skype app(s). This is what has brought the cross-app disconnect to light for us.

Why do we now have 2 accounts using the exact same email address? This REALLY needs fixing ASAP.

I have Windows 8.1 and use Skype messaging, but the video messaging sign on the Skype page is greyed out, I have contacted Skype and an agent took over my computer to try and correct the problem but with no success and I was told it was a Microsoft problem and to await an update this was two weeks ago and still no update, so how can I get video messaging to work or contact Microsoft in order to fix this ?

Original Title: Skype

I had, at the time of combining msn messenger and skype back in jan/feb of 2013 lost all msn messenger contacts, sent several emails with no response as to why and how to fix this problem. Am I still suppose to forget about my messenger contacts? Any help please.

[Moved from Windows XP Forum Category]

I will do my best to simplify this problem:

First - I have a desktop which is running Windows 8.1. I run it in desk top mode.

I have Skype installed and have had a Skype account for several years. I also have Windows Essentials installed. The most important part of WE, for me, is Windows Live Mail. It is a very useful mail program.

Now - the problem: Every day when I boot up my PC, I get a message from Windows Live Messenger stating that a new version is available. This message seemingly came from no-where starting about a month ago. I'm given two choices, I can upgrade or not upgrade. If I say okay to the upgrade the program returns a message which says there is already a newer version installed. I assume that this is referring to "Skype". Since it seems to be discouraging me, I select "Cancel".

Of course the next time I reboot the same upgrade message is present. It is quite annoying. I really just want the annoying message to go away, but I'm not sure what is driving it. The thing that I don't want to do is to disrupt my Windows Live Mail program with all my e-mails and contacts.

Suggestions???

can you please tell me if Skype is totally free that is from one computer to the other if it is what do I need to do to get it

 regards Roy

Please can you tell me how to recover the contacts of windows live which disappeared and were replaced by Skype contacts. (I don t know what was the cause of this)
when I made a restore from 2 days ago , I could find them again , but when I closed the computer and started it again they disappeared again.
the restore operation was very painful. because it looked that it never ended, and the monitor was all balck , the only way to get over was to press the windows key on the keyboard. I woudl not like to do again this restore with this difficulty.
thank you very much for your help
