Windows Live Mail FAQ

My Hotmail account will be locked in 3 or 4 days unless I type in a security code which hasn’t been sent to me!

I've been getting the "Call us overprotective" screen for the last couple of days.

A code has apparently been sent to my alternate account, but when I inspect ALL the folders in that account, there is no email.

I've had my Hotmail account since 1999 and don't want the hassle of trying to unravel it because of over-zealous security.

I'm quite fed up now and only have 4 days before my account is needlessly locked out.

Please advise.

Thank you.

changing alternate email – what happens during 30-day waiting period?

20. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: alternate account, security info

Moderators, please DO NOT LOCK THIS THREAD before I get a clear answer. I have searched many older posts on this subject and none of the advice given in them is applicable now, because Hotmail/Outlook has changed its account settings links and procedures. (See more below.)

I want to remove my old alternate email address because I closed that alternate account a few months ago. But how can I add a new alternate email address? Do I have to wait 30 days before I can add a new alternate email address?

In the account section, the page states:

You recently updated your security info

We have a waiting period for the updates to take effect. On (date 30 days from now), we'll delete your old security info:

(old alternate email address)

Once this is deleted, you'll be able to verify your account with info you have access to. If you didn't make the updates, or if you still have access to the above info, cancel the updates.
---
What does it mean? Does it mean that I can or cannot verify my account (if necessary) during the 30 day waiting period? Or that I can verify it only with the old alternate email address? (And that will not work, because the account has been deleted.) Or that I can verify it now, and anytime during the 30 days and afterwards, with a mobile phone number that I can add now? Or with a new alternate email address that I can add now (before the 30 day waiting period is completed)?

I seem to have gotten my phone number added, but I'm not sure. But now I cannot add a new alternate email. Will I be able to add an alternate email after the 30 day waiting period (when the old alternate email gets removed)?

What happens during the 30-day waiting period? If a person cannot access their account and needs a password reset, where does the reset security code get sent to? Does it get send to the deleted/defunct alternate email address? Some email services, such as Outlook, make deleted addresses available to other people 30 days after an account has been closed. And if the account was closed more than 30 days ago, then the security code is going to that previously closed address that someone else might be using now as a new account! Do you see the problem of having to wait 30 days to change the alternate email address?

On some older posts (6 months or older), moderators gave various people the following advice.
However, the following procedure is no longer possible because the links have been changed and renamed.

1. Sign in here (https://account.live.com/) using your Windows Live ID and password.
 2. Locate the Account Security section, and then click Manage beside Security Info.

3. Click Delete after Mobile phone/Alternate email address.
 4. Click Mark them all for removal to continue.
 5. Click Mark for removal.

Account Compromised?

19. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: alternate account
Yesterday, I started up my Xbox and, instead of signing me in automatically as it usually would, it prompted me to enter my email and password. When I did this, I was asked to provide an alternate email address and a mobile phone number in case my account got compromised. This was all slightly random, and it had never happened before. Seeing that my alternate email address had already been entered  automatically, I just skipped past the rest as I do not own a mobile.

Anyway, this afternoon, at around 4 PM, I signed into my hotmail account and was immediately greeted by an alert. It said that some Microsoft services had been temporarily blocked because I had apparently sent lots of spam messages to my contacts (I rarely ever sign into my account, so I can assure you this is not the case). While this was a concern to me, the only way to restore these features was through mobile phone verification, which as previously stated is not an option for me at all.

About an hour later I went upstairs to play on my Xbox and was told once again to enter my email and password. However, this time, upon entering them, I was told that I could not sign into my Xbox Live account because there was "a problem with your microsoft account".

So I go back downstairs and attempt to sign into my email account, but I am told "It looks like somebody else is using your account". The account was working perfectly fine an hour prior. Now here's the problem.

Normally it would be quite easy to recover my account, all I have to do is send a verification email to my alternate account. However, because I have not signed into that account in over a year (Which is why its called an alternate account, but I guess MS doesn't get that) the account has been deleted. Attempts to sign in with said account gives me "This account does not exist". This is the only alternate email address I had linked to my original account, and I can't add any others because I can't access the original account any more!

I have attempted to fill out the questionnaire, but it's practically impossible for me. I very rarely use my email account except as the account that my Xbox Live account is linked to, so:

  1. I have no idea who the last 5 people to email me were
  2. I have never changed my password for this account
  3. My last 5 emails were probably sent to myself
  4. The subjects of my last 5 emails were probably [No Subject]
  5. My mum has changed her credit card since the xbox account was set up so I don't know the expiry date, or the last four numbers
  6. I was very young when the account was set up, and as such I did not use my real name or date of birth.
So, to put it more succinctly, I have been locked out of my email account (and consequently my XBL account), and there is no feasible way of recovering it via email confirmations or questionnaires.

If anybody can provide me with a support number where I can speak to an actual human being who can resolve my issue I would be very grateful, as the support pages on the Xbox and Microsoft websites have proved tremendously unhelpful.

Can’t get into my hotmail account

04. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: alternate account, Hotmail Account, security question
Hello, So a few weeks ago my hotmail account got hacked or something and I couldn't log in with my real password so it told me to reset it I went to do it and it asked me a security question that was awkward to answer like who are your two best childhood friends which I know who i would put but i cant remember if I put their first and last names or if i put the word and between them or this ->& between them so I couldn't use my security question to reset it so it said we will email an alternate account of mine which I also don't have the password too since I made it in elementary school and I have the same problem with it. So I filled out a questionnaire to verify that it is me but since like most people I assume I don't use my email to send emails so a lot of the questions I couldn't fill out because it asked the topic of my last 5 emails and who they were too and things like that. So I went to to call hotmail. It turns out they don't have any human customer service just computerized and they don't do anything except refer you back to the questionnaire. So I kind of gave up and just try to get everything right with a password on the first time so i wont have to go in my email to rest my passwords for things like facebook, etc. Now today I logged on xbox live and they asked me to verify my email before I could log in live. So I had all of my stuff autosaved on my xbox but since my email got hacked the saved password didnt work and now I have to go into my hotmail account to get my password. So i'm paying for xbox live but cant use it. I'm completely at a dead end and extremely irritated. Can a moderator pm me and ask me questions to verify who I am so I can recieve my account back I have my enitre life on that email including bills, bank statements, everything. PLEASE HELP

My "alternate account" is far too old to remember the password, and I even filled out the lengthy form that asks for subject lines of the past few messages I've sent (and all that related stuff).  Nothing has worked.  I called Microsoft and it was useless.  How do I get my account back? Please please please help!
