Original title: Windows Live Calendar vanished

I just upgraded from Windows 7 (BEST THING EVER DEVELOPED) to, sadly, Windows 8.1.  Under 7 I had been using Windows Live Mail and the terrific calendar on my PC.  After upgrading to 8.1, all mail and all calendar content (doctor appointments, everything!) vanished.  There is no Windows Live apparently.  After googling for ages, I suspect the unreadable content is in 'windows.old' files.  Is there a way I can restore/retrieve this data?  Can I install WINDOWS LIVE (or is it WINDOWS ESSENTIALS) onto my now Windows 8.1 machine?  Thanks for any information/education.

This is my third try at this question. Can not receive email from Hotmail, my other accounts work fine. Since I posted my first question, I got 2 emails from Microsoft, but no others? I should have about 20 from eBay. Thank you.
The program seems to start normally, then a pop up window appears saying "you are currently working off line.  Do you want to go online now?"  I click on the "yes" tab.  I have to do this twice, as the pop up window disappears and then reappears after I select "yes" the first time.  Then in the bottom right hand corner of my screen the notification shows me being on line.  As soon as I ask for "send/receive" on any or all of my eml accounts, it immediately kicks me off line again.  On one occasion the connection lasted long enough for messages to appear to be received, but I  am unable to open the messages (likewise unable to open messages that were in to inbox prior to this problem starting).  I tried sending a test eml but when I click on the "To" button I get the message that the program is "unable to find recipients" i.e., it can't find the contacts.   My other computer has no problem sending and receiving mails to these same accounts, and I have no problem surfing the net on either computer,  so I feel sure it is not my server causing the problem.  I have done many cold boots, and I have disabled my antivirus, but none of these actions have made a shred of difference.

I have two Road Runner email accounts setup in Windows Live Email.  When I click on Send/Receive, one of them always works properly but the other frequently gets stuck at Authorizing then times out with the message:

Unable to send or receive messages for the XXXXX account. A time-out occurred while communicating with the server.

Server: 'pop-server.stny.rr.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC19
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

Sometimes I get this message:

Unable to send or receive messages for the XXXXX account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Server: 'pop-server.stny.rr.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

I did Internet searches for both Error IDs but could not find anything that would work.

I checked the settings for both accounts and they are the same.  I can access the account in question using RoadRunners webmail page.

Thank you.
