I have a number of DVD's I had made by Walmart (Yesvideo) of all of my various VHS, 8MM and super8 films.  I was able to import them to a file using the Windows Movie Maker, but it will not replay from the file.  I want to burn copies of these DVD's for my kids.  Where do I get the codec that will let me do this?  How do I know which Codec I need.  Yesvideo has said that it is OK to copies these DVD's, they just won't help you do it.

This is my first attempt at using the Movie Maker that came with my Windows 8 computer.
I have a .mpg file that I created using a video capture device to get the file from a VHS machine.
The file is visible with other software, but when I load it into Movie Maker, I get the audio, but the video is black.

Just for test purposes, I tried loading a .wmv and a .mp4 file, and they both work.

What's the problem with the .mpg?
I'd really like to work with it without have to run it through a conversion program (I'm afraid it will be degraded beyond its VHS quality).

UPDATE:   I found another .mpg file on my system that came with the computer (nature.mpg).
I works.  Seems that it's just the file from the VHS tape.

I have transferred some old family videos on VHS tapes to DVDs and now want to edit using Windows MovieMaker and burn a DVD that I can play on the TV, or a computer.  I can't import the audio/video files into Windows MovieMaker because I don't have the codec files needed for VOB???  My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2.  I have tried to figure this out before and just gave up because it seems to be over my head.  I read somewhere that all I needed was the TS_Video files, then I read that I needed to save and format as ISO files.

I borrowed a Magnavox DVD recorder/VCR ZV427MG9 to transfer VHS to DVD and I don't have the manual so I'm figuring it out as I go.  I have been successful in making the DVD, but now I've got to figure out how to get this DVD on my computer harddrive in the proper file format so I can pull into MovieMaker and edit.

I'm sure there is an easier way to do this and I'm 'bout to throw in the towel.  Any advice is appreciated!
