Windows Live Mail FAQ

Cannot close my hotmail account

28. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: livemail · Tags: Microsoft account, windows live account, Windows Live Hotmail

When I try to close my hotmail account I get the message:

There is a Microsoft email account (Windows Live Hotmail) associated with your account, so you can't close your Windows Live account immediately. To close your Windows Live account, you need to close your Microsoft email account first. After a period of inactivity, your Windows Live account will automatically be closed. Close your Microsoft account

I then click on the "close your microsoft account" link and get the message:

This option isn't available for your account.

I want my hotmail email account and my windows live account closed asap. How do I do that?

Thanks.

Xbox Live Account Locked With Defunct Primary Email Address

26. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: Microsoft account
Hello,

A while ago, my Xbox Live account was locked for some reason (I assume it was hacked). Normally, this would just require me to have the password reset, but I have a unique situation: The email account that I originally used to sign up for Xbox Live no longer exists. I attempted to use the following steps found on another thread:

"Please go to this link to start the account validation process:

1. Enter your Microsoft account that you're trying to recover and type in the characters you'll see in the pictures

2. Hit Next.

3. Click "I can’t use any of these options".

4. Enter your Microsoft account you are trying to get back into

5. Enter a working alternate email address to where we can contact you.

6. Click “Next”.

7. Fill-out the form as accurate as you can and click “Submit”."

I filled out the form and submitted it, but got an automated reply 1 hour later telling me the following:

"Your Microsoft account [defunct account] was created using an email address from a provider other than Microsoft. To reset your password for this account, follow these steps:

  1. Click Here for the Microsoft account password reset page.
  2. Select an option and click "Reset your password".
  3. Enter your Microsoft Account, then enter the security characters, lastly click "Next".
  4. On the following page, select "Email me a reset link" and then click "Next".
  5. A reset link is now sent to your email address.

Should you require further assistance, please visit the Microsoft account Support Pages.

The account recovery request with issue number [issue number] has been closed."

Unfortunately, these steps only allow for you to reset your password to a CURRENTLY ACTIVE email account tied to your Xbox Live account, which I DO NOT have, hence me filling out that form in the first place. Exactly what steps do I need to take to retrieve my Xbox Live account beyond the steps that have been provided, since the processes above do not seem to work?

Problem opening Microsoft Account – wouldn’t create an Outlook.com e-mail account

26. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: microsoft, Microsoft account

I didn't have a Microsoft account when I bought a Windows 8 phone 2 days ago.

I would like to retrieve my old contacts from the SIM card, and purchase/download some apps., for which I require a Microsoft account.

I read through all the help files first, and they seemed to indicate that it was very important to chose wisely in the email account used as my Microsoft account, since I couldn't change it later, without losing all purchases etc. Therefore a (new) outlook.com email account seemed the best bet, since I expect to change my existing internet carriers in the future.

After 2 days of getting "There's a temporary problem with the service. Please try again. If you continue to get this message, try again later" messages,

I have finally had to set-up this account (with an existing non-outlook.com email), solely for the purpose of posting this issue on this forum!

You’ve lost access to your email The inbox you’ve been using is no longer available.

I am trying to log into Microsoft live with another account I have and get the following message:

You've lost access to your email

The inbox you've been using is no longer available. This can occur when your account is owned by an organization, or when someone else confirms ownership of the email address.
You haven't lost access to the other services you use with your Microsoft account. However, you must choose a new primary alias to continue.

How do I resolve this issue and get email access for my account back with that email?

The email address is different from the one I am using to post this message.

Thanks.

Vernon

Outlook.com Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) Authentication Failing

26. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: EAS, microsoft, Microsoft account, Outlook.com Exchange ActiveSync
I reinstalled my PC with Windows 8.1 RTM bits. The Mail app connects fine to my Outlook.com account (running on a custom domain).  When I install Outlook 2013 however it is no longer able to connect. This was working fine prior to reinstalling my machine from what I recall. It looks like in the past few weeks there have been some EAS issues with Outlook.com so I'm not sure if this is related but since this is the only support channel offered by Microsoft I thought I would add in my report.

After installing Outlook 2013 I followed the guidance on setting up an Outlook.com account. This has worked flawlessly many times before. This time it does not want to accept my credentials:

Using Fiddler I can see the call to the server is returning an HTTP 401 Unauthorized as well:

POST /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync?Cmd=FolderSync&User=*** Email address is removed for privacy ***&DeviceId=4BB0759DD9A74D9EA1B032913059EF50&DeviceType=WindowsOutlook15 HTTP/1.1
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Type: application/vnd.ms-sync.wbxml
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate
User-Agent: Outlook/15.0 (15.0.4517.1504; MSI; x86)
MS-ASProtocolVersion: 14.0
X-MS-WL: Outlook/1.0
X-TransactionID: {19971586-D14A-4079-99B8-38CBACB2E72A}
Content-Length: 13
Host: www.outlook.com
Authorization: Basic ---password hash removed---

The password is 100% absolutely correct.  I have typed it out in Notepad, copied and pasted into the field to verify that there is no typo.  Because the Microsoft account behind this also has two-step authentication enabled I have also tried creating another app password but that also fails with the same error.

To summarize:
  • Connected to Outlook.com account on my Windows Phone 8, Windows 8.1 Mail app, but cannot connect using Outlook 2013 on Windows 8.1 (RTM)
  • Unauthorized error returned from server
  • Same process worked previously while running on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Preview
  • Tried using "www.outlook.com", "m.hotmail.com", "s.outlook.com", and "snt-m.hotmail.com" as server addresses
  • Have gone to the service status page and reported problems signing in and syncing email even though it feels sometimes like those reports get routed to /dev/null
Anyone else having issues connecting to Outlook.com using Outlook desktop client?

Is This Email Really from Microsoft?

25. September 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: microsoft, Microsoft account
I have recieved two of these emails today. Are they really being sent by Microsoft?
Both came to my email address. They both quoted my daughters email address in the email, not mine.
And both of the codes were different. I just needed to ask.
