Empty box opens in upper left corner of photo when I attempt to edit

An empty box opens in  upper left corner of photo when I attempt to use any of the editing tools.  This blocks out part of the photo making very difficult to edit. I am using win 8.1

e-mail attachments show a blue circle with slash

For 2 months my e-mails that I am receiving with attachments show an empty box with a blue circle with a slash across it.  How do I fix this?
