Right-click on the account name in the folder pane and select Properties.

  • On the Servers tab, ensure that My server requires authentication is selected
  • On the Advanced tab, change the outgoing mail port to 587.
Deselect This server requires a secure connection.

Click Work offline and remove any unsent messages from the outbox (below the account folders in the folder pane).

Close down Windows Live Mail and wait a few minutes before re-launching. Then compose a new test message and send it to yourself. Post any new error message in your reply.

This is the error that I still get after making all of the changes you've indicated. FYI, I am trying to send email from a free hotel WiFi connection. I can receive email, but not send any out using Windows Live Mail. Thanks for your help.

The connection to the server has failed.
