“Generic System 32 Error” received when loading Windows Messenger

Original title: Windows Messenger

 

Windows Messenger takes 10 minutes to load and then prints "Generic System 32 Error". . I have restored to an earlier date but still have the problem. Any ideas of how to solve? I am still on Windows XP.
