mail toolbar not acting like it should

Greetings All,

 

I have a problem with the mail tool bar.  I am unable to forward, reply or create a new email.  The tool bar works fine on my husband's computers.  How can I restore the functionality to the mail tool bar.  Selecting the 'contacts' option in the left hand box works.  The 'move' function works.  i'm a real newbee at this so any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.  i'm using an hp laptop with Win 8.
