gmail account rejects log on in windows live mail

My gmail account works on line but not on myAUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials (Failure) this is the message I get.

"the mial server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. verify that you have entered the correct account info in mail settings
