my laptop can't connect to the outgoing mail server after a recent windows update.  I'm using windows live, but outlook won't work either.

I tried changing smtp port 25 to 587 as recommended here in a 2011 reply to no avail.  emails are being received ok.  What else can I do?  I having tried restoring because the updates were extensive and I would rather not change them.
