windows live mail downloading 100,000s of emails since upgrading computer

100,000s of emails downloading since upgrading computer to windows 8.1 & changing from outlook express to windows live mail.  Checked on server and only 4,000 on server. Keeps downloading until I manually stop it. Using AVG anti virus and SPAMfighter for anti spam.   Any help appreciated
