the edit screen is blank. when I hit the play button, nothing happens.

I installed Movie Maker.  Hit Home/Add Videos and then selected the video to work on (mp4 file).  I see a frame from my movie over in the right side but the edit screen is blank.  when I hit the play button, nothing happens.  any ideas?
