Windows Live Mail FAQ

Verification email – not my address

21. August 2013 · Write a comment · Categories: Hotmail, Outlook.com · Tags: Microsoft account, Microsoft Account Team
I have received an email from Microsoft Account Team, thanking me for verifying my Microsoft account and giving me a code number. The problem is that the address shown was not mine but my grandson's!  I contacted him but he has no idea what happened. He lives 200 miles away and never uses my computer.
I have changed my password anyway but would like to know how this occurred.

Spanish Confirmation of Safety Information

In the past few weeks I have received a few emails from the Microsoft Account Team in Spanish. Here is the most recent example with some sensitive info removed:

Cuenta Microsoft
Confirmación de información de seguridad
Parece que has agregado información de seguridad a tu cuenta Microsoft ([email removed]):
Dirección de correo electrónico alternativa: [alternate email removed]
Puedes usar esta información para restablecer la contraseña si la olvidas.
Confirmar [alternate email removed]
Si no enviaste esta solicitud, haz clic aquí para cancelarla.
Gracias,
El equipo de cuentas Microsoft

Translating this reveals it seems to be a confirmation of an alternate email address. Neither of the email addresses in the message match my email address, but the alternate email is similar to my email (a few characters different). The message was marked as a trusted sender by Outlook.com so I am fairly certain it is actually from the Microsoft Account Team.

Is someone trying to hack my account or am I somehow receiving these messages by mistake?

Receiving security emails from the Microsoft account team referencing an unknown email account, is this a security threat?

I am receiving security emails from the Microsoft account team however they are addressed to an unknown email address (not mine). Is this a security threat? I changed my password and also checked my aliases to make sure no unknown email addresses had been added, have I done enough? I have copy and pasted an example of one of the emails below (I have removed my personal details however the email address listed is the unknown account):

Microsoft account security code‏

Microsoft account team (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***)

For the past week or so, I have been getting what I assume to be bogus emails from "Microsoft Account Team" in my junk mail folder. Here is the latest one I received...

Dear Customer,

Your Windows Live Email account has exceeded

its limit and needs to be verified, if not verified
within 24 hours, we shall suspend your account.
Click here to verify your email account now

Thank you
Windows Live
2013 Microsoft

The other ones I have gotten are worded a bit different, but essentially the same. The email address on these  is *** Email address is removed for privacy ***.

I guess what I want to know is if I am correct in my assumption that this is bogus or not.

I receive the Microsoft account security code‏ email but it is not for my email address.

verification codes/ hacked account?

Hello,

I received the following email today which was a complete surprise to me.

"Hi,
Thanks for helping us verify your Microsoft account (***an email address from my contacts list was listed here)!

Here is your code: **** (a four digit code was listed here)

If you didn't request this code, we recommend that you go to https://account.live.com and change your password.

Thanks,
The Microsoft account team "

The fact that the email address listed in the email is not mine makes me suspicious that someone has hacked into the account of that email address. I have already asked for help from the Live chat advisor but they couldn't help and suggested I try here. I have changed my own password and don't know if I need to do anything else.

Any ideas of what's going on will be very much appreciated.

Does Microsoft actually ask for your password?

Keep getting emails from Microsoft Account Team asking me for personal information or they will shut my account down? They also want my password as well. Does Microsoft actually ask this information. Just got my account hacked and don't want it to happen again.
