I found this thread and am getting the same issue with windows 7 when I am trying to send an email from windows live for a gmail account.  I have attempted all of the following:

1. delete account in windows live and re add it

2. repair windows live

3. Increase the wait time from 60 seconds to 5 minutes

I am still getting the error and eventually get the following error: Your SMTP server has not responded in 300 seconds, would you like to wait another 300 seconds for the server to respond?

Account: *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

Server: smtp.gmail.com

Any options for fixing this?
