I have been using the same Hotmail account for several years and have never had a problem opening or downloading documents.  It seemed to start right after Hotmail switched to Outlook but I'm not sure.  I cannot open, download, nor save any Word or PDF documents from my email account!  When I try to open a document it starts doing something (not sure because it is different than when it worked) but then a totally blank box opens up and that is only after trying to open it several times.  There is no error message or any other communication.  At first I could open Word documents but not PDF documents.  Now I cannot open either.  I can still open some pictures but not all.

I have a Vista OS, MS Office 2010, and I have reloaded the most recent PDF reader several times.  Nothing seems to work.  I really need to receive documents from email!  Can anyone help?

[Moved from feedback]

My system is on a laptop running Windows 7 64bit OS.

I had Window Live Mail 11 running while doing some other work on my laptop.  I switched back to see if I'd received any new emails.  When I went to click on an email I got an odd error message (unfortunately I don't recall the exact wording of the message) that stated something about the email content or body not existing or being available.

I figured that perhaps WML 11 had crashed so I shut it down and then reopened it.  WML 11 opened but all 3 accounts that were on it no longer existed.  The folders and subfolders were all gone as were all the emails.  All WML 11 showed is Quick Views, Outbook and Storage Folders.  Next to the Unread email under the Quick Views section no emails show up but I do have Unread Feeds.

I was able to located the folder where WML 11 stores the emails C:\Users\XXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail but when I opened the Inbox folders for each account it shows a handful of email messages at best.  So I'm concerned that I've lost years worth of emails.

I also had one of these three accounts on Outlook 2010 and that too lost all the emails and had to re-synch (if that's the right word) to the email account and re-downloaded the emails which were still out on the server.

So after a little looking around for a solution and coming up with nothing on the net that sounded similar to my situation I decided to play around with the WLM 11 folders a bit to see if I could figure out what happened.

It turns out that I was able to use a previous version of the folder (or is it called a folder restore point) by right clicking on the folders.  So I was excited as there was like 50,000 emails that were being restored.  It said it needed 5 hours to fully restore the one email folder.  So I let it do it's thing and I walked away to do some house work.  When I came back the restore had stopped at some point and couldn't any longer find the email files.  So skipped the files it couldn't find.  After clicking skip for about 100 times I decided to click cancel and the restore stopped.  I right clicked the folder again to start the process again but now there were no previous versions available.  So I was really....lets call it unhappy...about loosing this option to fix my problem.  I had checked the other folders before starting the restore and all the folders had a previous version.  Now suddenly none of the folders had a previous version.  All the folders previous versions were gone.

So essentially somehow tens of thousands of emails across 3 email accounts and on 2 different email software (WLM11 and Outlook 2010) vanished, got moved, or got deleted by some process not initiated by me.  In addition, somehow the restore points were also deleted.  I've never heard of anything like this before.  I've done a virus/spyware scan using my TrendMicro product and nothing was found.

The only lucky part of this story is that I have a back up of all of these emails on a older boxed up desktop.  So they aren't lost forever.  However, I'd still like to get some help with this issue because I'd hate for this to happen ever again and not have any option to recover.  Any ideas on what could have causes something so catastrophic?

Original Title: Windows Live Mail Accounts Vanished

Hello,

My name is Miriam and I have called on several occasion to receive the access code that accompanies the link to unlock and regain access to my original account, *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

I have opened a new account to which escalations can hopefully send the access code and link to unlock my account. The new email account is *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

I have two reference numbers provided by escalations technical support at Microsoft. These reference #'s are 1212072274 and 1212244989

I have sent an account recovery request on July 16th and July 18th, and have received an email titles "Final Update" on July 18th.

I received a request for feedback on July 22nd, to which I provided feedback.

I provided an account recovery request on July 24, with Issue # 94666509

I received another Final Update on July 24th regarding my locked out account *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

I have received a Windows Live Customer Support Response on July 26th, with Reference # SRX1212072274ID. This email stated that I had received a password reset link to my alternate email address *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

Upon attempting to access this link, I was asked for a password/code which was never provided to me with the link. As a result, when I attempted to access this link a second time, I was advised that it had already expired.

I contacted Windows Live Customer Support again, and on July 27th was advised via email that I had again been provided with a password reset link, and once again it expired before I had received any new password or code to unlock my account. The email subject line had reference # SRX1212244989ID.

Today, I have once again called Customer Support and was advised to open a new account. I did so, and the new account is *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

I was advised that once a new account had been opened, I should then go to answers.microsoft.com and post as much information as possible related to my case, so that I may hopefully receive a THIRD password reset link, but this time, with the code or password to accompany it, so I may finally unlock and access my blocked account.

I await your prompt response. I have been dealing with this issue patiently for about three weeks now, and hope to finally be able to resolve this issue and recover more than 15 years of email information which is currently in-accessible to me. Thank you.

Seriously man, I have the same issues here. Okay, I haven't logged into my old hotmail.com and msn.com e-mail accounts for a while until just now, and as a matter of fact I never really paid attention even when hotmail was converted into outlook. Now I just logged into my old e-mail accounts, everything is gone. All my e-mails received from and sent to my friends and family, some crucial documents saved in my accounts - ALL GONE. It's like yay fresh new start F**K NO. Now, I can't even receive new e-mails - they are just NOT coming into these accounts. So, I surfed to see what the **** was wrong and found this thread and read all you customer service rep peeps' replies here and I am pretty sure that you guys are as much lost as I am. All your replies provide no solutions to any of the problems addressed in this thread. In other words, you guys just don't know anything to help users out man. I mean, who does not know how to transfer data from one e-mail account to another huh? And who does not know how to restore a damn message that one deleted from a trash box or a deleted message folder? And this is probably the most f**ked up part I think but since when hotmail (or outlook as it is now) started to automatically delete all the contents from an account due to inactivity? I have been using hotmail.com (or outlook as it is now...) more than 15 years now, and this sounds so goddamn new to me. I have multiple accounts, and some of them I don't even log in for more than a year but everytime I log in, everything used to be there. Now you guys telling me that if the account is not accessed for more than a year, everything is deleted automatically? Now that's really really f**ked up man. I really mean it. Never heard that Google ever does that type of messed up ****. I already have written a feedback via my outlook account regarding the new look or this whole stupid outlook thing but I'd like to stress this one more time. This whole new Outlook thing, is probably the biggest colossal failure ever by MS (and Windows 8 is in the 2nd place)... I wonder whose idea it was but whoever it was needs to get punched in the face like a hundred times so he or she gets the message that IT WAS NOT A SMART MOVE. I mean, do you guys even check how many the old hotmail users are baffled and complain about this new stupid outlook thing?

Hi,

I have an email account with @outlook.com, this email account is seldom accessed and one of the email accounts I have with a strong password. The latest login I made to it was last week and was presented with the notification message as per the attached image. Even with the notification, the email account is working fine after you click on Skip and no restrictions in using it. I changed the password immediately with a stronger combination.  Checked the the INBOX and there was no bounced back messages and the Sent it empty so it cannot be spamming as there will be traces of it found usually when your account is used for sending SPAM mails. If the email is used for something fraudulent, then a notification should have been sent by Outlook or any affected parties but one week had passed and none was received, only the usual Newsletter from online shop I signed up with this email account and from Outlook and Windows like Skype, etc... Used the feedback contact of Outlook but no reply was sent to me also when inquiring about the issue. I use the same computers, devices and browser to log in to my other Live and Hotmail accounts always and none of these account had this issue and they are the accounts that always get SPAM mails and used to send out emails.

Kindly provide more details on this issue and what are the risks of letting this on the account or any possible solution other than verification by mobile which seems unnecessary and almost seems like what spammers do to gather information from the account owner, something like "we notice your account was accessed from somewhere and to verify this is you, enter your username and password in the link or I have lots of cash in the bank, send me your full details so I can transfer the money to you or to your bank account".

Another email requesting assistance retrieve my lost emails. In the last response from microsoft it was suggested that I stop posting multiple messages and reply to the last person who responded. I would love to be able to do that but it seems the system does not allow that. My feedback and suggestions to microsoft would be just that, assign someone for my issue that I can deal with directly, that I am able to respond to without having to go through this process. Its frustrating for your customers and probably is for your moderators as well. Also being able to SPEAK to someone would be great and probably speed up the process saving me and you as a company time which means money.

Now, could someone please help me!!?? Will I ever be able to get the lost emails back? I have answered all quaestions sent to me and followed all instructions and getting nowhere. PLEASE HELP.
