When data was transferred from my old PC (Vista) to a new one (Windows 8), everything moved beautifully except photos taken in 2014.  More specifically, photos that were imported after a crash recovery in January (thank you GeekSquad) seem to have completely disappeared. I used Windows Photo Gallery before and have downloaded the newest version onto new PC.  I have searched .jpg and .img on both the new PC and old hard drive with no luck.  Any ideas? 

(Very hard lesson re-learned on the importance of regular back-ups *hangs head in shame*.)
