My recently edited pictures using Microsoft Office Picture Manager are no longer able to be viewed.

I am using a 32gb Transcend SDHC 10 speed memory card in a Canon Powershot 260 camera.  After taking approximately 20 pictures throughout the day, I used Microsoft Office Picture Manager to edit and save the pictures directly off the memory card.

I am aware that I should have copied the pictures to my computer first and then edited the pictures so as to always have a backup in case something went wrong, however that is not what I did, and my lesson has been learned as I've been working to resolve this problem for several hours today.

After editing the pictures, (rotating them and clicking autocorrect, nothing else) I clicked save.  This save should have reflected the changes I made onto the original copies stored on my memory card.  Assuming all went well, I then copied my edited photos from my memory card to my hard drive.

Shortly thereafter, I realized I was unable to view almost all of my pictures.  The thumbnail now shows a little white box with a red X through it.  I have removed the memory card and tried viewing the pictures on my camera, but I receive error messages there as well.  In my wife's computer, I am told the photo can't open because the file format is not supported or is corrupted.

Sadly, I cannot revert to the original using Microsoft's built-in backup tool in Picture Manager, because it says there is no backup.  Furthermore, all available memory card recovery services I've utilized have failed, and I've tried roughly 4 or 5 so far.

I'm uncertain why the photos can no longer be viewed.  The process was very simple.  I removed the memory card from my camera, inserted the card in my computer, began editing the photos using Picture Manager, saved the edited photos and then ran into this problem.

Why are the pictures currently unreadable?  Is there a way to restore the pictures to their original form?  If not, is there a way to get a program to view the pictures?

For reference, I've tried opening the file in every conceivable program, be it paint, word, photo viewer, you name it to no avail.  Also, the files are listed as .jpg, and I have tried renaming one file to .jpeg as that was suggested elsewhere, but this did not seem to work unless I did it incorrectly.
