My husband tried to log in to his Outlook account, it said he needed a code. Why? Now his account is unable to be opened. What is the code for and how does he get his account back?

Below his sign in was a message that he needed a code also.  He didn't have this before and didn't know what to do so he did nothing (of course).  How can he open his account ?
