My hotmail account has somehow become linked to my gmail account

My hotmail acocunt has somehow become linked to my gmail account. A number of times now, when I send an email from my hotmail account, the recipient sees it as coming from my gmail account and therefore the response goes into my gmail account - to the recipient it appears that I sent it from my gmail account, only I didn't. The email I sent appear in my hotmail sent items but the reply comes into my gmail account.

I don't know how the 2 accounts are linked and I don't want them to be linked. I've tried to look at my account settings and the gmail and hotmail accounts are not even used as the recovery email address (for that I have used a 3rd email address). I cannot figure out how they have become linked. The only link is occasionally forwarding emails from one account to the other and having them both open in different tabs at the same time

Can anyone help and advise how to unlink them and make sure they remain separate?
