When I trim a clip, it doesn't trim, (whether I hit 'm' hot key, or click the actual trim button). Then after I try to trim, any clip I roll over disappears. I can still play the movie, but I can't edit anything. 

I have:

uninstalled everything I installed this week

ran a virus scan

uninstalled windows essentials, and re-downloaded and installed it (twice)

rebooted multiple times throughout. 

Unfortunately, I no longer have the original windows 8 disk to do a recovery. They should put that online.
