When I try and play a video clip or dvd my computer locks up and I have to shut down, also a blue box appears in the top right hand corner saying I have new apps that can open this type of file but not how to use them or what they are called or where to find them.

I have down loaded VLC media player but this also refuses to play video clips and dvd's and locks up the computer as well.

I do not know a lot about computers only just how to use it for what I need, any help will be appreciated.
