Is there any way to permanently delete photo attachments from received email, leaving just the text of the email for storage

I saw the answer to this question in January 2015, which was just what I wanted to know. But how do I edit incoming message in the first place?!!  (Sorry, basic point, but I'm an old and slow learner, using Windows Vista)
