How to get rid of annoying Facebook/Twitter Promo Pane, Vertical Column When I read an Email ?

When I open an email from a friend to read, I also get a Facebook/Twitter promo pane as a column down the right side of the screen.  I am not on Facebook, I dont want facebook and I dont want that pane there.  It takes up screen space and also is disracting.  How do I get rid of it?
