I want to "attach" text to my photos - to remember place names or other background on places in holiday photos for example. Can I do this with Windows Photo Gallery or other free software? I don't want to add text to photo images or be able to print the notes alongside the photos. (I'm quite interested in GIMP and PICASSA too but not sure of they have this functionality either - even if it sounds a pretty basic feature.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
