how do I eliminate duplicate emails in Windows Live mail

I have Windows Live Mail on my Windows 7 operating system for my laptop.  Upon opening up Live Mail today I got flooded with duplicate emails in my inbox.  How do I get rid of them and preventing it from happening again?
