I have the same problem!

We just bought a brand new windows 8.1 computer and there is very little loaded on it yet.

I configured Windows Live Mail to send and receive emails through an existing account at Charter.net. This is the same account I have been using for 15 years and accessing through Windows Live Mail for the last couple. 

I used IMAP port 143 (IMAP.charter.net) to receive messages and leave them on the server.

I used SMTP port 25 (SMTP.charter.net) to send messages.

These settings worked perfectly for a couple days, 

Now when the computer goes to sleep and wakes up any emails that were in the inbox disappear and are completely gone! They are not in the delete folder and they are gone from the server.

I contacted Charter.net and they assured me that they can not remove it from our windows live and it is illegal for them to delete messages from our in box.
