CODE demanded for Microsoft Account Security “does not work”–afraid to lose access to account in 5 days

For two days now, Microsoft has been signing me out of my Hotmail/Outlook account and asking me to "get a code" that would be sent to another email account for me to enter in a box. Well, I finally did that but I'm told in red letters that the "code does not work" even though it is the exact code sent to me by them. I tried both copying and pasting it and entering it myself. Doesn't work. 

It seems to me that, once again, Microsoft launches some new feature without being truly ready for it. Last time, when they switched to Outlook, I lost access to all but one account for weeks. 

Can someone help me with this? There's a note on that page stating that entering the code could be skipped but would be required within 5 days. Since the code I was sent doesn't work--and I doubt any will--I'm afraid I'll lose access to my account in 5 days, and my whole life is in that account--everything--so this can't happen.
