I have Vista 32 bit.  When using Windows Live Mail  offline:  Unless I have a "reading pane" activated, I cannot read the contents of an email.  I can see the headers, but I get an error message when I try to "open" it.  With "readind pane" turned "on", I can see the contents of the email.  Is there a way to view the email contents without having a "reading pane"?

I'm using Windows Mail, Windows Vista 64bit and Eset smart security.

When I receive certain emails, mainly marketing emails from companies, not all images are displayed. Although some of the images in the email are displayed perfectly, others are just an empty box with a red X. On one particular email when I hovered my cursor over the box with the red x it showed it as a spacer. The same sometimes happens with company logos.

I do have images blocked in options so that they don't download immediately, but even after I've clicked on "click here to download images" at the top of the email, not all images are displayed in some emails whilst others display perfectly.

I've tried everything I can think of in the  Mail options menu and nothing seems to work. If I opt to view the email online, everything displays perfectly.

Please help.

I apologize for any redundancy, but I've been searching the forum for a long time, and the info I found seems to apply to all kinds of different scenarios, but none with the same parameters as mine.  So I'm posting my request for help for my specific situation.

The issue concerns Windows Live Mail on my desktop. (ISP is Earthlink, in case relevant)  WLM has been working just fine.  My husband, who is not computer savvy, was working on the computer earlier today.  The WLM program was open but was minimized. He was looking at various websites on Chrome.  When he was on my desktop after closing a site, a message window popped up saying something about 'unused disk space being recovered'.  It seemed to occur automatically, i.e. he didn't activate it because he's afraid to do anything he doesn't know about.  So he got off the computer at that point.  A bit later, he opened WLM to check emails, and ALL (I mean, EVERY SINGLE ONE) of the messages that had been in the folders of our 4 accounts were GONE!  All folders were still there, but they were all empty. It shows "there are no items in this view."  However, my views are set for "all messages", and I hadn't changed any settings.  I'm trying to figure out what happened, but I'm MAINLY trying to find where all of those emails went.  I know that he could not have deleted the emails, because it would have meant deliberately deleting messages from multiple folders for 4 accounts.  All of the folders are still intact and now have newer emails downloaded in them.  Any suggestions as to what might have happened?.  At this point, I'm hoping that the messages weren't DELETED by the program, but were moved to some other storage location in conjunction with the "unused disk space recovery" activity, and still exist somewhere for restoring to the active folders.

Other issues::  My email was hacked a few weeks ago, but I changed my password prior to the disappearance of these emails, so I think this shouldn't be related to that.  Also, I wondered if I might have gone over a message limit maximum, but even so, I can't believe that would wipe out all messages in all accounts across the board.

Thanks for any feedback or suggestions that you BRILLIANT experienced users can provide!

Original Title: Can't get it to "go online"

After I installed Windows Essentials, one of my security programs starting telling me every few minutes that Windows Live Mail was trying to change the application associated with the .EML file type extension from Outlook to Windows Live Mail. I keep clicking no, but it doesn't take no for an answer, and is back again a few minutes later. How do I stop Live Mail from doing this?

If I click "Stop Alerts...." on the bottom, I'm not certain if Live Mail will keep trying indefinitely, and just be stopped each time by my security software.

There are two steps to completely screwing yourself.  Please do both.

1)  ISPs regularly update their POP server names.   Change your POP server name in an existing mail profile to the latest one your ISP has.    Windows Live Mail will conveniently re-download ALL of your messages again,  so your inbox will be polluted with duplicates of every single message.

2)  Decide to rectify the above abysmal situation by deleting all your messages and then your mail profile.  Since POP servers maintain all the messages on the server, when you recreate your mail profile they should all be downloaded again.  Then you will have a sane single copy of each.

If you have followed these steps correctly,  ALL of your emails (perhaps several years worth, as mine were) will be irrevocably deleted from the mail server and your life, never to be seen again.  The deletion of messages on WLM,  for a POP server (!), is silently synchronized to that server.

After this happened I combed through the options to see if there was ANY indication that deletions were synchronized for a POP server, and if it is there I couldn't find it.   My guess is that they changed this behavior when they introduced IMAP support (since those are always synchronized).

If only I had know... had known... had known...

I am getting the above error when I try to install windows essentials I have net framework 4 installed. I have tried just installing windows mail on its own get the same result. Could someone please give me a solution that works. Thanks

Hi All,

Need your urgent help.

My Windows Live Mail crashes everytime I started it. When I start it, it will show "Recovering the Windows Live Mail database..." and crashes/close.

I have tried reinstalling my Windows Essential/Live Mail, but it still has the same problem. Please advise on how I can solve this issue.
