can’t add email address or domain to safe senders list

I am trying to add peakreward​s@bgesmarte​nergy.com to my safe senders list. If I try
peakreward​s@bgesmarte​nergy.com
or @bgesmarte​nergy.com
or bgesmarte​nergy.com

always the same resulting error message:
An email address must be in the following format: *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. A domain must be in the following format: example.com.

What am I doing wrong?
