I am using Windows Live Mail, Office 2013 and Windows 8.1. I view my emails in Windows Live Mail. When I try to open a word document email attachment I get the message "Word experienced am error trying to open the file". If I save the document, go to properties, general and click unblock it will open. In Windows Live Mail I have gone to Options, Safety Options, Security and unclicked "Do not allow attachments that could potentially be a virus to be saved or opened" and but still cannot open word files. The same thing happens with Excel files.
