Microsoft - I really want to keep using WPG. It's a great program and I've been using it since Windows Vista. However, I'm getting nervous about your commitment to the application - and I hope that you are committed to it, as if you are not, there will be no Microsoft-made photo manager/editor for your operating system.
The current version is from 2012. You haven't added any major new features since at least 2009 or 2010.
Let's look at some of the features that you really should look more into:
- A location map: I don't even care that you'll use Bing Maps instead of Google. I just want to be able to select a subset of my photos, click a button, and see a bunch of pins drop onto the map within the application that shows where the photos were taken. Not requiring a separate browser window to be opened that only has a GPS string in the URL data - keep all that stuff behind the scenes and just map the photos map within the application. Like iPhoto. I don't even care that it's copying them - I just want an update.
- The option to switch people back to text names, NOT photos: Dear Microsoft - when I have hundreds of names in XMP metadata, it's a lot faster for me to scan through a list of alphabetic names, OR sort by most-tagged names. It really doesn't help me to see hundreds of tiny little postage stamp sized photos that I have to mouse over each one and make sure it's the person I thought it was. I understand that "a picture is worth a thousand words" but please, give us the option to switch to text if we prefer. Names were text based back in the Vista version I recall.
- A convenient way to migrate all tags - including video tags - to another system: right now, it's pretty good that XMP data allows photo tags to be moved automatically with the photo. However, you allow us to tag videos too - but those video tags are stored in the pd6 files in %localappdata%. There's no easy way to export those out. Please provide a "moving photo library to a new computer" functionality so that everything can be easily moved over.
- Boolean search operands: I want to be able to search for Mom AND (Dad OR Brother) when I write a query. Please give us some more advanced search functionality. Remember, the digital photo revolution was a decade and a half ago now - many of us have tens of thousands of photos. Professionals likely have hundreds of thousands if not millions.
- Let us know you're still working on the program: All is quiet on the update front. Some update, any update would be nice just to show you're paying attention your users.
Thanks, Photo team. We're counting on you!
