A saved Word/Excel document sometimes has a blank box alongside it instead of Word or Excel. When I send these as attachments they can’t be opened up by the recipients.

A saved Word/Excel document sometimes has a blank box alongside it instead of one showing Word or Excel.  When I send these as attachments they can't be opened up by the recipients. What am I doing wrong.
