Question about Outlook Express

since the windows 10 anniversary upgrade this week, my windows live mail has an error - a problem occurred while trying to open this message.

I cannot open a new mail or reply to mail, but get the above message.

Windows 10 Home cannot start this hardware device (VIDEO/DVD player) because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Windows Live Mail does not allow me to edit contact information.

When I attempt to edit contact information, I receive the following message:

The contact information could not be saved.  Check the contact's information and try again.

How can I make this work?

A friend of mine is a senior citizen (even more senior than me) and has been using Windows Live Mail for a long time. She had to replace her computer recently and now runs Windows 10, but I still installed WLM for her because it has features that the built-in Mail app lacks – in addition to having a confusing UI. My personal opinion of Windows Mail cannot be published here for lack of polite synonyms…

Are there plans to replace WLM with a look-alike that has all the required features, or should I direct her to an alternative, 3rd-party solution after the Live Essentials end of support? She cannot afford Outlook, either as a standalone program or within Office 365.
