A few days ago - for no apparent reason - Windows Live Mail spent ages stuck in trying to download an email and then decided to delete all my emails - from all accounts and the storage folders. Accounts reloaded when things settled. However, there is a problem with the storage folders. All the emails are corrupted. File structure is the same, but in a new "recovered items" folder. But when I click on each email, I get the text of some other, completely unrelated email, frequently the same unrelated email for every email in a particular folder.

If I search in Windows Explorer under "appdata" all my emails appear with the first few lines of text as they should be - BUT !! if I click on an email file - the file which opens is the unrelated email again. Clearly, the info for all my lost emails is held somewhere but I just cant access it

What has happened and how can I recover all my inaccessible emails ?

((Windows Live Mail 2011 - Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308)))

Could you please help me open these files I have found on my hard drive?

First make sure that you can't see these messages in Windows Live Mail. When a fault occurs, the program will try to recover from it. Any messages that it's lost status data for will be recovered and placed into a folder called Recovered items under Storage folders. When viewing your message list in Windows Live mail, press Ctrl-Y and look for the Recovered items folder. It may have several sub-folders, possibly several layers deep. Can you see a Sent items folder in there?

I found teh recovered items folders but when I looked in teh Sent folder all the addressees were my email address not the address the email was sent to.  Ican see these addresses by opening each email.  Is there anyway to recover the sent emails with the proper addresees??

Sry to bother - have searched for this answer but found nothing specific recently that answers everything.

I just did the automatic update for Windows Live and lost all but one of my accounts, all emails between 2012 and today, all storage folders. I can't find the directory my emails are in, despite checking these forums. I did find out to sign in to Windows Live Mail - which got me my most recent emails and one account.

I'd very much like to find emails and folders - lots of important stuff. And to save myself adding back the accounts again.

Any help very welcome. Won't be around again till later to respond to answers but very much appreciate any in the meantime.

Thanks!

Muriel

At C:, Users, Name, AppData, Local, Microsoft, Windows Live Mail, Storage Folders: I have some duplicate folders. These duplicate folders have the same name as other ones, but with a (1) added. Some others are duplicated in a folder named "Imported Folders". How can I get rid of these duplicates? And, how can I keep WLM from creating them again when I open the program?
I can't seem to find a sent items folder in my windows live mail. On the left of my home pge I have quick views, then my account, then outbox then storage folders. Within storage folders I have all that was on my old outlook express before we change to Windows 7 and set up live mail (my son did this for us) There is a sent items folder within that but there is nothing in it. I used to easily be able to look through sent items (important sometimes) in Outlook express but I can;t seem to be able to do that now.

I exported my Windows Live email that was organized in various personally created folders, on my old computer to Live Email on my new computer but when it imports it puts every thing into `Storage folders'.  How can I easily move all my emails and personally created folders, into the Windows Live email account I created on the new computer?  In other words, my emails and folders are all there in WLE on the new computer, but in the `Storage Folders', not in the actual email acct.  I can highlight the emails in Storage Folders, right click and select Move but it is a tedious process.  It takes a LONG time just for a moving 20-30 emails, and I have hundreds.

If I click on the Folders tab and select Move To it says I can't move a folder from one `server to another server'.  So maybe the better question is How do I import these emails and folders into the server I want instead of the default `Storage folder'?

Down the left-hand side of my Live Mail 2012 window is a 'pane' which lists, from top to bottom, Quick Views, Accounts, Storage Folders. If I right-click on this pane, then there is are options to move entries up or down the list.

I have used these options to change the order of my various Accounts, so that the most-used ones are at the top rather than being in alphabetical order. The re-arranged view is preserved when I close Live Mail and Accounts appear again in my chosen order when I re-open Live Mail, so no problem with Accounts.

However...I also used the option to move Storage Folders up the list so that they appear *above* Accounts, but this re-arrangement is lost every time that I close Live Mail. How can I get Live Mail to retain my preference????

I have moved recently from Outlook Express on XP to Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8.1   I have a number of e-mail accounts and can read/write to them all as required.

In OE I had a number of message rules set to sort incoming POP mail and move it to various local folders. I have created appropriate local storage folders in Live Mail and re-entered these rules, but they seem to have no effect on any incoming messages. I have tried testing the rules by using the 'Apply Now' option and specifying the Inbox to which they are to be applied, but that does not work either.

Some threads on Message Rules imply that there has to be a separate set of rules for each account - is that true? If so, then how are they meant to be created, as there seems to be nothing in the process of creating rules to specific to which account they apply.

I am used to Outlook Express and it wasn't confusing.  This is confusing as most days strange things occur.  Today, I went to delete a folder marked delete as I already had a delete folder and in deleting it , deleted all of my very important folders which had been under "import" I think as I had moved them initially from outlook express.  They are not under the remaining delete folder nor are they in my recycle bin.  Where are they?  I looked under view, did compact view etc, did not retrieve the folders.  Where are they?  These were all VERY important folders.

I don't think Windows Live Mail is a good product.  I need help in finding my folders, that is not too complicated.  Please help me.

Windows Live Mail suddenly began downloading messages that were previously downloaded - and many deleted - and did not stop until it reached 598. Far worse, however, is that every one of my storage folders has disappeared.  These contained a great detail of essential information and correspondence for my work.  Where did they go?  How can I get all this back?
